Rio Grande Explorations is Mentioned

on the

Michael Berry Show

February 9, 2016

In what is quite likely the most random and nutty thing to ever happen to me on a Tuesday morning, Michael Berry (the "Czar of Talk Radio") spent 3 minutes talking about me and this website.

For those that don't know, Michael Berry is a syndicated radio talk show host here in Houston. He's on the radio 5 hours a day and I usually listened 3-4 of those hours. If I'm at my desk, I'll listen to all 3 hours of the morning show and then share an hour of the afternoon show with my wife and son on the drive home. His brand of humor and politics is right in line with my way of thinking. I'm either yelling along with him as he covers politics, laughing my butt off at his jokes, or reminiscing as he talks about growing up in southeast Texas in the 70's and 80's. I love the show and have a tremendous amount of respect for this guy. Can't stress that enough. He's a good guy!

So… this morning I got back from a meeting and saw that Michael Berry tweeted that “anyone not listening to the show is a booger eater.” So, I responded “Damnit... I was stuck in a meeting. I'll catch up with the podcast, lest I be known as a 'booger eater.'" I don’t normally respond to tweets like that. Not real sure why I did that time. Just bored I guess.

Well, I went about my morning and didn’t think any more of it. I was listening to the show at my desk like I usually do when I heard this (click the logo):

I about had a damned heart attack! For what it's worth, he’s right… I can BBQ. Pretty dang good at it, too.

A few minutes later I got this tweet:

Checked out your website. Delighted to know folks still care about railroads. This bump's for ya, bud.

This was truly an honor. Thank you, Michael.

Here's a photo of my smoker. The week I got it, I properly Christened it with real coal!

Later that year (Dec 9), I got the chance to meet Michael Berry. He was signing bottles of his moonshine at Spec's Liquor downtown. On a whim, I asked Michele to run over there with me during lunch. She agreed and I got a signed bottle for me and another for my grandfather. Berry is exactly what I expected him to be in person... just a normal dude.
