The San Juan Extension
Sublette, New Mexico
Sublette, NM is located at MP 306, about 25 miles west of Antonito.
Sublette boasts one of the most complete collections of railroad structures on the line. Included, of course, is the Section House. All of the buildings are lovingly maintained by the Friends of the Cumbres & Toltec.
The small village is nestled into the north end of a short valley in one of the most remote areas on the railroad. It's truly a peaceful, beautiful location. |

Is this the Coal Bunker? If so, it was moved from Allison in 1945. |

The Sublette Bunk House is made from hand-hewn logs, likely dating to the original construction of the line in 1880. |

Water Plug |
In 2006 the Water Plug was temporarily out of service and a water car was placed in the 949' long Sublette siding to service the locomotives. |

In October 2009 I spent the day at Sublette and took the following pictures. It's a very relaxing... peaceful place. And the view is spectacular. |

Heading from Sublette back to Highway 17 and then back to Chama. It's an easy drive, but I wouldn't try it when it's wet unless you have an AWD SUV or truck. |
