UP 1989

Rio Grande Heritage Unit

On October 11th UP1989 arrived in Spring with a special "Operation Lifesaver" train. I didn't find out about her arrival until the 12th (Monday). On the way home I started to ask my wife to keep an out for 1989 as we drove along Lloyd Yard. I'd barely uttered those words when she spotted the locomotive. That evening we went back and tried to get pictures. But, good ol' UP parked her in the worst spot in the yard. Michele dropped me off on the highway overpass and orbited while I hiked over to the edge and got these two shots. They're hardly worth showing, but here they are anyway.

I jumped on the internet when we got home and determined that she'd be leaving Spring Tuesday morning for a quick hop to Magnolia, TX. I figured i would go into work late and not miss this chance. Fortunately UP didn't keep me waiting long. 20 minutes after I arrived in Old Town Spring, the OLS train came out of the yard. I quickly made my way to the wye where the best light was and grabbed a few shots as the train went through. 1989 was on the rear.

On the way home from work (Tues afternoon) we found 1989 in Lloyd Yard again. This time she was 3rd in line on a freight heading north. My wife, Michele, got these shots as we drove past. Stopping was out of the question because of the rush hour traffic. I don't know why she's in a freight. I'd heard online that the plan was to take an OSL train up to Palestine, TX and back on Wednesday.
