My N Scale Version of the Route from Malta, CO to Minturn, CO

31 December 2010

I used up the remainder of my vacation days

after Christmas and worked on the layout.

Minturn Yard looking south (RR east). The foam blocks will let me separate the track/yard level from the Eagle River (on the right). The weights are holding everything while the glue dries.

View of Minturn from across the room. Pardon the mess under layout. It's going to get a lot worse before it gets better.

Minturn Yard Lead, looking north towards the yard. The Eagle River will be where the bare plywood is. There will be a hidden scene in the closet. You'll have to duck under and stand up in the closet to see it.

Same spot as the photo to the left, looking the other direction. The main continues around to the right to Belden Mine. There it loops around and comes back on the same shelf but ~3 inches higher. Red Cliff will be located on the lower shelf in the corner. The upper shelf will be the yard and tunnel at Tennessee Pass.

As I was a snapping photos a train went by, courtesy of UP. This is the view from my office / train room. The view through the trees is far better in the winter. In the summer I can't see much at all.

This is where Belden Mine will be. Notice that the line splits here just as the prototype does with the main and siding on opposite sides of the river. The tunnel at Belden will on the far right edge of the shelf.

Here's a view from where the Eagle River will be looking up towards the bridge that the main uses to cross over. The siding will continue on the opposite side from the main to serve the mine. The final track plan for the siding and yard is still under development. It will resemble the prototype, but highly compressed.

And, here's an aerial view of the Belden area. The tunnel will begin about where the right most clip is. The entire loop will be hidden by the mine and scenery. The mine will be just behind the foam RoW of the siding. I may break from the prototype here and make this a stub siding because of space limitations. The crossover/bridge in the background will be the beginning of a 3-4 foot high helix to take the line down to Malta, which will be located far below Belden. I really need to draw out the track diagram that exists solely in my head.
