Well here we go, I promised you picture's of 488 and I got them, I drove over Friday on my Old Faithful truck and visited the Chama, Thanks to Mark Yates for helping me out and letting me in and such.. Thanks Mark.

Here is the Cab of 488,  all the plumbing is in and the cab is in place.

A long view of 488, you can see the white insulation and the freshly rebuilt interior of the Cab.

Monday February 7th 2005...

Well it was a cool day in Antonito, Cold wind from the west and it was snowing up on the San Juan Mountains West of Antonito... the Clouds stayed just west of Antonito all day until about 5 when the snow came into town..

We only had about a Half inch of snow gather on the ground..

Now I had a old friends who wanted some info on a old Map I have, well here it is...

It is the Town of Antonito from the early 1900's...

You can easily see the Railroad tracks as they pass between the streets.

Today in the shop, we continued work on Parlor Car 511.. We are still putting in the overhead storage above the windows and we are making everything from scratch, so its taking some time, but I think they are looking great... And work is being done on the doors also, they have been Hand sanded and re-finished and metal plates were added to strengthen them and the hinges have also been repaired.. Thats all for today, more tomorrow....

I apologize, these aren't the best Picture's, but they still show the Railroad info on it, you can see the Santa Fe Branch and...

the Durango Branch on it leaving from the legs of the Wye.

I have a Wonderful Friend named Sheryl who has been my friend for years, we grew up together... Well she works at a Title Abstract Company who has been in business for over 110 years here locally and I am working on getting some pictures of some amazing old maps they have there.. so I will try to get picture's of them for you.

This is my Friend at the Abstract Office and she is working on setting up the plans for visiting the Abstract, so everybody say Thanks to Sheryl for helping out the Website...

Tuesday February 8th 2005...

Early Morning Antonito, cold.. Very Cold!!!

Locomotive 488 passed its Hydro-test Today, tomorrow, they will steam her up... Yeah!   That's all I know, don't have any specifics.. with e-mail and cell phones and regular phones and fax machines... well its just hard to get any info from Chama... I hope on installing a Carrier Pigeon Roost on the roof on my House.. should be able to get info from chama soon, if the birds don't freeze!!!!  And Yes, I am being very sarcastic, if somebody in Chama in the Office is checking out this Website, get me some info here!!!!!!!!

Anyway 488 should be steaming under a coal fire tomorrow... I can hardly wait to run that Locomotive again..

Wednesday February 9th 2005...

The Tamper is loaded on a tractor trailer and is ready to be shipped out.

Thanks to Russom Trucking of Chama for doing the Job.

And there it goes, the Tamper is on its way to Oklahoma for rebuild.

John Russom is at the Controls of the Truck and hoped to be to the Oklahoma border by nightfall.

See you later, the Tamper will return ready for service.

Well today Car 511 rolled out of the Antonito, freshly rebuilt and ready for service...

In the first picture you can see the new over head storage racks.. they were made entirely from scratch in the Antonito Car Shops...

In the second picture, you can see the freshly rebuilt door, they were hand sanded and refinished and metal brackets were added to strengthen them.

And last, the car rolls out of the shop ready for service.

Oh and 488 was fired up today, it had a full coal fire going and steam... the Locomotive has 2 leaking Staybolts that need to be repaired and the Safety Valves need to be replaced, other than that the Locomotive is ready to be bundled up and finished, now the Locomotive will be timed and i'll get more info for you soon.

Another view of 488, doesn't that new interior look sharp.

I messed around with this shot to show more details.. a look at the Insulation.

A look at 488's front end, the Smokebox door has been closed, but the inspection door is open to check for Steam leaks during the Hydro-test.

And to let you know the big day is Tuesday, that is the day of Hydro-test, wish 488 some luck...

Now a look at 487 on the opposite track..

All of 487's rods are off for the New Bushings that will installed.

Here is a look at the Firemans side Crosshead, it is still in place and I assume just the Babbitt will be replaced and the Pins...

A look at 487's front end...

The number 3 Driver and Crank pin, this is on the Firemans side of 487.

The front end of 487 has been jacked up and the Pilot truck removed, you are looking at the Pilot truck of 487 with its wheels removed..

Now here is 489, it is having its inside sheets in the Firebox removed...

A look at 489's bare boiler, you can see the Mapping drawn on the boiler for the Ultrasound test.

The Smokebox door on 489 wide open.

Here is a look at 489's Firebox and the sections being removed.

This is the Right side of the Firebox and section removed.

A look at the Sand-Blasted Firebox Flue Sheet on 489..

Looking at 489's right side of the firebox, you can see the Staybolts that have been ground down for removal.

Hey there is old 497 sitting in storage... Frankenstein himself waiting for the day that he may come back into service, I miss that heavy Monster.

Now just so you know 497 is intact, the only things that have been removed are the items that would freeze, other than that its fully intact..

A look at the Cab of 497. that low firedoor on 497 was kinda rough, but 497 steamed like crazy, hot locomotive.

Another look at 497's Cab...

Now I don't if this is a secret or what, but a few years back, the railroad worked on new trucks for the C&T Passenger cars... don't know what happened, but now this truck is just sitting in storage..

Look at those, Narrow Gauge Roller Bearing wheels.. there is actually four sets of these wheels.

Rio Grande Southern Number 5 exiting Rock Tunnel at the West Portal.

And here she comes out of the East Portal.

Galloping Goose Number 5's distinctive nose comes ahead out of the Tunnel.

Number 5 on the Rock Wall at the Toltec Gorge.

Ophir Loop and Lizard Head Pass, Thompson Park and Dolores Canon and now the Toltec Gorge....

Number 5 coming out of the West Portal of Mud Tunnel.

Locomotive 463 passes Number 5 on the Sublette Siding with Westbound Train Number One.

Number 5 coming over Ferguson Trestle as the Driver peaks out of the door.

Now why I am featuring Pictures of Rio Grande Southern Galloping Goose Number 5, well she is coming back to the Cumbres and Toltec in 2005... I'll get more details for you later.

More views of 488..

488 is coming along just fine.

You can see most of the Plumbing has been installed for the Hydro-Test.

A look at the Firemans side running gear, this is the Eccentric Crank on the Main Crank Pin on the Number 3 Driver.

A look at the Bracket for the Air Pump and above that the Walkway above the Air Pump and the Steam Dome.

A look at 488's Expansion Link, it is not fully installed as the Locomotive is still getting timed.

A look at the Pilot Truck on 488 and the Cylinders.

488's left side cylinders, the valve is still uncovered and exposed.

Another view of the Smokebox inspection door.

488's right side cylinders, both the Valve and Piston are uncovered.

488's right side Crosshead and Combination Lever and Union Link.

Another view of the Insulation on 488.

You are looking at the Engineers Inspirator and the Area under the Cab where the Distributing Valve will be installed.

You are in the Engineers seat looking out the front cab door, you can see the throttle and injector just ahead...

A view of the Cab Plumbing.

You are now in the Firemans seat... there is the Firemans Injector and the Curving pipe to the extreme right is the Steam Assisted Draft, the Blower pipe. That Black handle up to the right is the lever from the Whistle Cord, the Cord hooks to a lever on the right side of the cab and thanks to a rod across the cab hooks to the lever you see and out of the cab to the actual whistle.

Here is a look at the Johnson Bar and its Rack and behind that is a Valve, that is actually the Mountain Cock or Driver Brake cut-out. The pipe comes up into the Cab and back out and allows the Engineer to cut out the Driver Brakes on the Locomotive..

Looking up to the roof and the Water Glasses and throttle Rods and Steam Gauge and the Main Steam Shut off valves up above.

Another look at the Firemans side of the Cab, that rod on the wall is the Starting Valve handle for the Injector, that handle opens the valve that begins the flow of water from the Tender to Prime the Injectors.

A view from the Cab looking forward out of the Window.

Another view of 488's Cab, there is the Firedoor and Plumbing and to the right you can see the Johnson Bar.

And another view of 488, I try to include as many photos as possible to give you as many views of the work so you can really what is going on.

Now here we are at the Sandia Peak Tramway.. This is the World's Longest Passenger Tramway, The Sandia Tramway was built By Bell Engineering of Lucerne, Switzerland and was Constructed between 1964-1966 at a cost of 2 Million Dollars. This is a Double Reversible Passenger Aerial Tramway.

The Red Tram begins its climb to the top of Sandia Peak and at the same time it's Opposite the Blue Tram begins it's descent.

The Blue Tram comes into the Station, The Total Horizontal Length is 2.7 Miles and Rises a total of 3,819 Vertical feet. The Elevation at the Summit is 10, 378 feet above Sea-Level and the Base Terminal sits at a Elevation of 6,559 feet. Amazingly the ride to the Summit takes 14 minute's at a speed of about 13.6 Mph. And, if you look below, thats actually a Water Tank under the Tram, it holds 1,000 Gallons of Water, for the Summit.

Making the Climb from the Base, we quickly begin our climb to the Summit.

Now we are passing "Canon Rock".

This is the view from the Gondola.

Look directly in the middle of the picture...

The Rock faces are amazing.

The Sandia Crest was actually created when the Crust of the Earth cracked and the Crest is actually the upturned crust. There is actually something like 30 thousand feet of altitude between the two layers now.

The views are amazing.

Look closely at the Crest in the distance and you can see the layers of the Crust.

Approaching the Summit of Sandia, you can see the observation decks just ahead.

We are now docking at the Summit.

Looking East at the Summit... down below are the the little towns of Cedar Crest, Sandia Park, Sedillo and Edgewood..

Another view of the West Face of Sandia.

One of the Gondolas begins its descent...

The Gondola is falling farther away as the cable is pulled away from us at the Summit.

A view of the Summit, to the left is the Restaurant on the Summit..

This is the Visitors Center.

A view of the Sandia Summit Station.

My Sweety Erika enjoys the view at the Summit.

Looking down the East Face and the Chair Lift that brings the skiers up the Hill.

Another view of the Sandia Crest, this is looking south.

Looking Southeast from the Summit.

Looking Northeast from the Summit, my home can actually be seen from here, at least where its at.. Well thats it for this week, more of the Locomotives to come.. see ya guys later.. Carlos
