Hey its another Colorado Sunset..

Hey the weather has been a little rough, so I apologize I have been unable to get any Pictures of the 488 and 489.. I plan on driving my own vehicle over to Chama next Friday to get some pictures of the Locomotives..

I made a stop over at the Santa Fe Southern on my way to Alburquerque, I have come to really enjoy this Railroad..

Monday Jan 31st 2005...

Early Morning Antonito, it about 7:20 in the morning and its quite refreshing outside..

The Backhoe is pulling a Passenger car out of the way to switch out Car 505 completely done and ready for service.

There goes Car 505 out of the shop..

Now is it being switched over the Main Track

We got a few inches of Fresh Snow in Antonito this weekend.

Car 505 is on the Main Track.

Now the next car set up to come in for repair is brought back to Track Four.

Today we rebuilt the B-Side Truck on the Parlor Car, we jacked up the Car and pulled out the trucks, we rebuilt some of the brake rigging, added plates behind the Journal boxes to decrease lateral motion, added a little to tighten up the bolster and then re-assembled the truck and put it back under the car, now both trucks are done.. we plan to work on the platforms and change the A-side wood platform to a Diamond Plate metal deck and the car is being cleaned. We also tested the brakes, made a few applications and releases and they are ready to go.

Wednesday Feb 2nd 2005...

Airgas from Alamosa comes in on Wednesday to deliver our welding and gas supplies.

There's our Good Friend Ed.. he has become a good friend of ours.

It was a sunny day in Antonito, colder than heck, but sunny.

The Antonito Depot sits against the Blue Colorado Sky.

It gets warm enough for the snow to melt, than freezes very quickly again.. look at the Icicle's on the Fort Knox building in Antonito.

Another couple of views of Antonito today, Icicle's on the Telegraph Booths and Caboose 0579...

Today we worked on Parlor Car 511, we finished the new metal deck on the A-side of the car and the interior is being refinished.. the wood takes a beating from the sun.. We also did some repairs to the roof over the platform and the ends of the cars are being repainted. We are also installing overhead storage for bags and such above the windows.

Also rods on the 487 are off and the Pilot and Trailing trucks on 487 are being rebuilt.. 488 will be ready for the Hydro test next week and the side sheets of the firebox on 489 are being cut out for inspection.

Friday Jan 4th 2005...

Hey guess what, I made it to Chama today.. I took pictures of 487, 488 and 489... even a few of 497.

Today there was 5 feet of heavy compacted snow on La Manga Pass and 7 feet at Cumbres Pass.. its beautiful up there.

So check back for the Feb 1st Week update in about a day or two for picture's of the the Locomotives in Chama..

I decided to take a few picture's of the Place, just to give you a view of the place and what's up.

This is a Batch of wheels, I thought this was a Cool picture.

Another possible restoration..

I am assuming this Boxcar is for storage..

How about this Bay Window Caboose.

This is a Santa Fe Southern Caboose, I have always loved Caboose's.

I like the Image of a Caboose sitting on a Siding..

I love this Shot.

This is a Center Beam Car, the Santa Fe Southern hauls quite a bit of Lumber.

Freight on the SFSR: averages about 10-15 loads per week which are set out on a siding off the main line in Lamy, which is then brought up to Santa Fe New Mexico and set out either at the Premier docks for them to unload (that's a Budweiser product) or onto another siding closer to the Santa Fe Southern yard for them to transload. SFS currently handles lumber (on center beam cars), particle board/OSB (oriented strand board), and pipe, with some more types of loads hopefully on their way this year.

And of course the Passenger Trains that run quite often.

Here is Locomotive 92...

Locomotive 92 is the John D. Morgan.

A little detail on the Trucks of Locomotive 92.

Another detail shot, I like this kinda stuff.

Locomotive 93 is the Brent A Polanchek

93's rear lights and number boards.

Well we are back to the rebuild project at Milepost 316.. after the work was done we had to move the equipment back out.

We built a dirt ramp to load the Bulldozer and now the trackhoe is using it to get on the Flatcar.

At this point the Roadbed was done and graded, ready for new Track.

Now begins the process of loading and moving the equipment out.

Almost on...

And the Trackhoe is onboard the "Aircraft Carrier" Flatcar.

Now the Trackhoe turns around and removes as much of the Dirt Ramp as possible to help the track crew out.

Working on the ramp...

Rolling along the tracks just East of Milepost 318.

Time to unload the Trackhoe...

The Bulldozer is parked next to the Diesel 19, compare the sizes....

The Trackhoe is moving off the Flatcar, my work is almost done, I hauled in the Equipment, both the Trackhoe and Bulldozer to the worksite and hauled it out. I moved in the supplies and new Ties.. no problems, I was very Happy with myself.

Diesel 19 did her Job and did it well.

At this same time, 497 was still hauling Passengers on the C&T,. here she is at Los Pinos.

Light Engine 497 at Cumbres, waiting 10 minutes before departing Cumbres behind the Passenger Train.

497 at Los Pinos Curve.

Diesel 19 hauling Ballast, here she is at Osier getting reloading early one morning.

We weren't going far, so we were only hauling a single ballast car..

The Pettibone, she will be working soon.. moving the Rail for the new Track at Milepost 316.

Here is a shot of the Graded Roadbed at Milepost 316, its ready for ties and rail.

The Eastern edge of the tracks..

Another view of the Finished roadbed.

It was actually pretty cool to walk thru here before the track was put back in.

The ties are in and the rail, you can see some of the spikes still sticking up.

Looking at the freshly installed Rail and Ties.

The new section has been re-attached to the old section.

The Track crew is spiking, this was hard work.. I helped a little.

All new tie plates and new spikes were installed.

The ties were solid oak, so that required using a air powered spiking machine, it works on the same principle as a Jack hammer.

The guys are going at it and soon this section will be back in service.

Looking at the New Track at the "Roller Coater".

Very Impressive, it looks great.

Now here we go, 3, 2, 1.... Boom.. the Explosives are set off at Martinez Cut to re-align the track.

The Explosives started at the left and went in sequence to the right..

The Sound was amazing, it sounded like hundreds of glass windows breaking as the rock slide into the canyon below.

The dust settled into the canyon and it was all over.

Thanks to my New Friend Jussi from Finland, here are some shots from oversea's. The Jokioinen Museum operates 3 Steam Locomotives and soon will have 4 Locomotives under Steam.

Time can be a little rough on railroads, see the trees growing right up between the rails in Finland.

Thanks to my Mr. Jussi Tepponen, Chief of Operations, Jokioinen Railway Museum, Finland.. for all the photos and more to come on later updates, feel free to visit: www.jokioistenmuseorautatie.fi

Gentleman at work on the Jokioinen Museum Railway.

One of the Motor-Cars and look closely, this gentleman has a Rio Grande Logo on his Chest...

Some heavy work,

Looking out the front window of Diesel Locomotive Nokian Tehdasrata.

More MOW equipment.

A control stand, you can read some of the controls.

Now these are some tough Railroaders, rolling down the tracks on Human Power.

Thats it for this week, I hope you liked the Visit back to the Past with the Rebuild of the Roller Coaster/ Milepost 316 Picture's. I hope to visit chama this weekend and I will get picture's of 488 and 489.

Have a great Week, Carlos
