Here is a Shot from the Cab of one of the Locomotives of the San Luis & Rio Grande and it was taken right at sunset as the train rolled thru the Valley Floor traveling West into Alamosa.

This photo was taken in August of 2001 on the Georgetown Loup Railroad. It shows GTL's # 14, a Shay locomotive, as it runs around the train at the Georgetown Station. It will soon be pulling the train back up the hill to Silver Plume via the High Bridge, several miles up the hill.

Thanks to David Ketchum for this Photo, hopefully he will add a few more in the future, thanks again.

Well its just another beautiful day in Chama.....

Well I was working on rebuilding trucks with Marvin and Ronnie was hard at work Painting. The first car has its first coat of Paint.

Now he is working on the second one, we are going to paint three cars in Chama.

Monday we should apply the second coats on these cars..

There we go, both have their first coats of red on, Monday we will add another coat and the black.

Well here is Machinist John Smelster working on cutting down the Axle of a Passenger coach wheel.

This is a Car Axle being machined, the centers are a bit heavy, so the shop is cutting them back a little..

This is the last Truck we worked on last week, it is completely pulled apart and we added shims to the left side journal boxes and built up a little wear on the strike plates on the bolster.

Marvin did the honors of welding the worn parts for us.

Now in Antonito we use Air Jacks to lift the cars, we couldn't do that in chama, so we used the forklift with the Backhoe's help to keep the Tail of the Forklift from going up in the Air. Amazing with the Backhoe's help, we lifted the cars right up into the Air.

Now you are looking at a brand new wheel, it is a blank and still needs some work. It will be cut inside to fit the axle and after attachment to the axle, it will be machined to check for roundness...

Here is the Boring Machine, the Machine doesn't spin... the whole bottom part does.

Shop Foreman Steve Montano was doing the work on this project.

Now here is Donald Martinez working on Masking the Air Pump, 488 will get another paint job as will 487, the tenders won't be touched, but the Boiler jackets and cab will be redone.

Here is the fully masked Cab of 488.

Ricky and Tommy did this work.

Caboose 0306 is being Freshly Painted in Chama as we speak.. it was completely stripped, primered and is being freshly painted..

And next to it is old Caboose 05635 being completely rebuilt, I will keep you informed on its transformation.

Now there is both of them, I will get back to you with more picture's of both Caboose's.

Some of the Freshly redone wheels in the Chama Shop, they will now be machined to polish the Wheel Surface.

These are actually the last wheels done outside of the C&T Shops, we will in the future do our own wheels right here in Chama.

Well today Wednesday the 18th of May, with Marvin at the throttle and me as the Fireman, 488 stretched her legs a little as we left the Chama Yards Behind.

488 steamed like a champion and with a light fire.. I kept a level fire over the Grates and 488 just kept the Pressure needle right at 195 pounds.

She ran quite well, needs a adjustment or two, but was doing just Grand..

But a few miles into the Narrows, the Johnson Bar started getting a little jumpy, Marvin shut the throttle on a downgrade and 488 slow down quickly as if something was binding... then in a left hand curve I noticed a Problem with the Expansion Link. Not sure of the exact problem, but the radius rod and expansion became a bit tight and we had to back into chama... there was a little damage to the radius rod consisting of a chip in the metal, but nothing the Chama shop can't fix.. I will give you more information when I get it.

In the picture, Marvin has the 488 in reverse.. see the Johnson Bar.. and we are rolling back into Chama.

Here we are on 488 back in the Chama yard, 488 was in the shop by Noon and the guys went right to work on the problem.

I tell you what, the 488 ran great... and it is Beautiful...

Look at the Locomotive shine, I apologize.. I took these shots with my Cheap Digital Camera, but I will have better shots from film in next weeks updates.. I just wanted to show you the 488 as soon as possible.

I am at the switch and Marvin begins to back 488 down the Shop lead track..

Thanks to John, here are shots of Ilwaco Railway Car N-10.

Here are a few picture's from the Ilwaco Railway and Navigation Co. RR (also known from 1888 to 1930 as the Irregular Rambling and Never-get-there
Railroad). Later it became part of the Union Pacific until
abandonment.

Thanks to John Sporseen for the Photo's.

Two Shots of the Car N-10.

It is amazing to see these Beautiful Cars survive to the present day and I have more shots of this car in the future.

Interior of restored Ilwaco Railway Car N-10... thats beautiful.

Its not slim gauge, but!! here is a Shay and a Heisler from Cass.

Back ground of Heisler is the old saw mill at Cass. Thanks to my friend Bob Stiverson and his friend for these Photo's.

Now Welcome to "Lost Canyon Lake Lodge".

We stayed at this Beautiful Bed & Breakfast while we visited the Durango & Silverton.

This is the room we stayed in, warm and comfortable.. I loved it, didn't want to go. The "Lost Canyon Lake Lodge" is near Dolores, Colorado and you can e-mail them at: tomandsally@lostcanyonlakelodge.com or visit: www.lostcanyonlakelodge.com .

I loved the place and will have more from Lost Lake in coming updates, if you are in Durango or near Dolores or just chasing the stations of the Rio Grande Southern, stay at Lost Lake, its the perfect starting point and the food is Great.

The Lost Canyon Lodge is a Contemporary two-story Log Cabin nestled in the Pines over-looking Lost Canyon Lake. The Lodge sits at 7400 feet above sea level and has four guest rooms, two with private lofts and all with their our Bathrooms.

The Lodge sits on 20 acres and is just about 2/3 of mile from the old Rio Grande Southern Main line.

This is view from our Second story room overlooking the lake and deck and hot tub below.

This is the front of the Lodge.

And I must say, the Lodge dog is a sweet animal and very friendly.

Locomotive 482 has the Morning Cascade Train burning up the rails along the Animas River Valley.

Ain't she a beauty...

Across the crossing and onward to Hermosa Siding where I will catch up with it.

Love those Yellow Cars..

And there goes the Alamosa bringing up the rear.

The Fire Service water tank cars at Hermosa Siding.

Those are Good Looking Cars.

Now thanks to my Friend Richard Cutter, we have shots of a San Luis & Rio Grande train with FEC Locomotive 148 in the Consist coming up La Veta Pass.

Climbing up the East side of La Veta.

This is a Beautiful Mountain Pass.

FEC Locomotive 148 is in the consist as the Train makes the climb up La Veta, La Veta is a 3 percent climb...

Train Crews make a inspection of 148 on its Flatcar.

And following the Train is a Hi-Rail Truck.

Here is Engineer Mike Nichols, he has been a Great Guy to me for years.

Now I was not allowed into the Cab of 482, so I would like to thank the employees of D&S for taking these picture's for me....

A look at 482's water glasses and water column and steam gauge.

William listens in to the Durango Dispatch over the Radio.

Another shot of Mike Nichols.

And the classic shot of Engineer William Colley.

And a great shot looking down the Firemans side of 482. Well I will have more soon, I took shots of 488 and those will be on the next update, and Caboose 0306 will be on here in its fresh new paint.. keep your eyes open.. see ya soon.
