the left its Pilot Jim Russell, Chief Pilot Bill Chapel and Pilot
Clarke O'Byrne.. and check out Clarke, we are at the Largest Hot Air
Balloon Rally in the World with over 650 Hot Air Balloons and while
Clarke flew, he wore the CUMBRES & TOLTEC Hat I gave him. |
|
We received heavy snow over a good portion of the
Cumbres & Toltec and for a few days, gave passengers a look at Winter
Wonderland Scene's on the Cumbres & Toltec.
October 10th-2005, 488 takes water at Sublette,
New Mexico. |
|
There was over 6 inches in Sublette that day...
what a beautiful site, all the fall colors in full effect and
snow..... That's Magical. |
|
I don't know how, but the track crews patrolled
the track ahead of us, how they kept the motor cars moving in this
snow is beyond me... |
|
Arrival at Cumbres Station, Colorado. |
|
The Heaviest snow was actually in Big Horn this
day with over 10 inches. |
|
Now a few views of the Durango &
Silverton.
Durango & Silverton switches its
trains with Diesels to reduce coal smoke. |
|
I recognize the gentleman in the cab,
that's D&S Engineer William Colley. |
|
I love these great machines... and I
love the paint scheme. |

Welcome back to Antonito, Colorado.. the Eastern

|
488 rolls her train out of town. |
|
Thanks to the track crew, Diesel 19 hauled a lot of
replaced ties off the railroad..
Basically the Track crews go in and replace old
ties with new ones, afterwards the ties are collected and haul out.
We actually have lots of ties that still need to be removed from
along the tracks. We try to organize trains full of train crew
members and we go out and collect the ties. |
|
Diesel 19 hauled 3 cars of used ties out
that day. |
|
Conditions in the Canyon and Los Pinos Valley are
kinda rough on ties, lots of snow and moisture... |
|
More Picture's of the Cass Scenic..

|
Now back to the Cumbres & Toltec at Lava, 10 miles
west of Antonito.
As usual, every year we store MOW cars and ballast
cars in Lava just 10 or so rail miles from Antonito, Colorado.. It allows us to clear the yard for the winter... in
Antonito, we do all the maintenance on all the passenger cars and
need room to store 19 passenger cars. |
|
I backed into the connecting track at Lava, I
didn't think I was going to make it, that's quite a grade going into
that track, it's a Four percent or better and it was a little
difficult. Once the sand got under all four drivers, 484 crawled
right up the Grade. Look closely at the picture and you can see the
sand on the rails ahead of 484. |
|
If you look to the right, you can see the Mainline
from Antonito coming up on the side there. |
|
484 running light is at Sublette taking water. |
|
That is the classic pose of a steam locomotive.... |
|
Fire patrol behind us is stopped next to the
Antonito Track
Crew, we passed them here at Sublette. |
|
Fall Colors and a Steam Locomotive. |
|
484 running light has arrived at Osier Station,
Colorado and is
waiting for 487 and few passenger cars and Cook Car 053. |
|

Car Shop for repairs.. Car 521 is in Track 3.... |
|
Here are more picture's in the Continuing series
documenting the new construction of the track leading to the New
Restoration Facility in Antonito.
On Tuesday, the track crews were beginning work on
the last switch leading to the Car Repair Shop. |
|
They are spiking the rails to the new ties,
|
|
In the picture, Robert on the right.. gray shirt
is nipping the tie or applying upward force so Julian on the left
can firmly spike the Tie. |

Thought you might like as many picture's of this
process as possible... |

possible.. |
