Well here I am with the "La
Veta High Cheerleaders" I rode in to La Veta with SL&RG Passenger
Train, We tried to count the people using a photograph a friend
took, there must have been over 400 people waiting to greet the
train in La Veta, it was amazing! |
|
Hello Everybody, A empty
BNSF container train stops at the Alburquerque Depot for a Crew
change and a refueling. |
|
Hey there's my Buddy Therese
at the throttle at Clarks Trading Post in Lincolnville, NH... way to
go Therese... |
|
Well its the 8th of February, 2006... The
Guys in Antonito are hard at it and having finished another car are
in the process of moving another car into the shop for repairs... |
|
The guys had these cars parked over the Diesel and
so had to move them out across the highway to switch the yard.. |
|
Diesel 19 with Marvin at the throttle gets back to
work and is switching cars. |
|
Diesel 19 pulling a repaired and ready to roll car
out of the shop. |
|
After cars are repaired we normally move them to
the mainline and get to work on another car. |
|
It was a busy day in
Alburquerque, the Southwest Chief was also in station awaiting
departure for La Junta, Colorado. |
|
The Cook Car has been moved down towards the
new shop... |
|
That's the first car to roll down the new track. |
|
I am looking forward to the future when we can use
this car, its beautiful. |
|
The Cook Car is close, I will check back to see if
Marvin put the car into the shop. |
|
There's the new switch that was put in last year
by the track crews. |
|
I really love this car, it has alot of History..
my grandfather remembers putting in a little bit of time cooking in
this car for the Rotary Trains, my grandfathers Friend Fred Valdez
was actually the cook, but Gramps use to help. |
|
The Alburquerque Skyline
shines in the background. |
|
Diesel 19 pulls a string of cars across
Highway 285... |
|
That Locomotive has been a lifesaver so many
times.. I really enjoy 19, she's a great locomotive and i have spent
alot of time on her. |
|
Once the guys have thrown the switch, Diesel 19
backs cars down the main to the Depot. |
|
I got lucky this day, I
think the picture's came out great, couldn't have asked for
better... Of Course, I had to jump a fence and park in a deserted
parking lot... Sssssh, don't say anything. |
|
Welcome to Alburquerque Fire
Station Number 1. |
|
Ladder Truck Number 1. |
|
Now look closely, this is a unique
part of the Station, its a 3D sculpture of Fireman at work.. |
|
Another view of a BNSF train
and the City of Alburquerque. |
|
Welcome to Alamosa, I was
lucky to be chosen as a crew member on the SL&RG Passenger train
over La Veta Pass. |
|
The Caritas stands next to the
Alamosa Depot in Alamosa, Colorado. All the Important people are
making speeches and we will depart at 9:25 for the run over La Veta. |
|
There's Mom And Dad and if you look
over My Dads left shoulder, well I was just lucky on this one,
that's Mr. Eldon Morgan and they are all enjoying the festivities. |
|
The Lead Locomotive had Marc Widener
at the throttle and with the Roadmaster in the Fireman's seat,
Conductor Trainee Paul Lisac and myself were in the second
locomotive. We are heading east and are approaching Blanca,
Colorado. |
|
Now look closely, there in the
distance to the left of the metal building is the Ole' San Luis
Southern Locomotive I showed you in earlier updates. |
|
Passing thru the Blanca, Colorado. |
|
Well we have hit the grade and are
climbing up thru the first part of the Forbes Property. In this
picture we are looking back over Caritas as we head east.
Some people were curious as to why we
used two locomotive's, well we wanted to have a back-up in case any
one of the locomotives may have failed. We also could only fit the
Caritas in the tail of the wye by itself, so we were happy to have a
Cab facing each direction. We didn't turn the locomotives! |
|
Continuing to climb up the west side
of La Veta Pass. |
|
Over the Caritas and far in the
distance is Mount Blanca. |
|
I really enjoyed the ride, it was so
cool to see how amazed the people were with both the scenery and the
actual ride. |
|
We are nearing the Summit at Fir. |
|
At the Summit of La Veta Pass...
|
|
Most of the time, I get to ride
around the railroad with other railroaders, some just as scrappy as
me, but some days you get lucky... meet Photo-Journalist Catherine
Anderson. She rode the cab with me down into the Town of La Veta.
|
|
Now we making our descent to the Town
of La Veta, Colorado and the "as I like to call it" the D&RGW
Centennial Depot... the La Veta Depot was built in 1876. |
|
Up at the top, there was actually a
bit of snow.. |
|
Looking forward as the train descends
into La Veta. |
|
We are riding the rear platform of
Caritas as we back into the tail of the wye in La Veta. |
|
The La Veta Cheerleaders, it was so
cool to see so many people turn out for Thursday Train. |
|
The Track crew did alot of work in a
short amount of time and got the wye back into service, They did a
beautiful job, Caritas rolled thru the wye without even the smallest
of squeaks. |
|
Caritas sits at the North tail of the
wye, we could only fit Caritas, so the locomotives were not turned. |
|
We tied down Caritas and I stayed
with the car while the Locomotives moved around the Wye. |
|
Caritas is literally at the end of
the rail in this picture. |
|
Three of SL&RG"s Maintenance of Way
Gentleman, they did the impossible to get the Wye back into service
before the train arrived in La Veta.
Have a great one and i'll have a new
update really soon, Carlos Llamas... |
