Welcome to Alamosa, Colorado... Old Rio Grande station and home to the guys of the SL&RG...

Another look at that Spring Compressing rig!!

We use the come-along to lift the spring and roll it out of the side frame of the truck!!

Orlando and Rudy are working on the Fire Patrol Motor cars...

Ha, caught Orlando trying to drink a Pepsi...

Both fire patrols will get a tune-up, one of them will actually get a new clutch.

Although its important for us to pull water tanks behind the Fire Patrol motor cars, they are damaging.. the constant bumping of the water tank on the motor car is damaging to the transmissions!! They can cause faster than normal wear.

A motor car outside of the Car Repair shop!!

The Chama Based Handi-cap car is in the shop for repair and paint!!!

A look at one of the trucks that will be repaired. see that home-made frame above the trucks, that supports the work we do on the truck.

Orlando is on the back-hoe and Rudy is on the ground, they are moving the second Fire Patrol from the dual-gauge display track to the main and will move it to the car repair shop for repairs.

The motor cars are heavy and they have hooks built-in to aid in the lift.

Almost have on the rails..

Okay they will pull one with the other..

The Chama based Handi-cap car is getting ready for paint..

We will say goodbye to the green and paint it red with black trim and a silver roof.

The Motor car is up in the air.. This Motor car will get some work done on its clutch.

A look at the motor of the car.

The underside of the Motor car.

This motor car is probably getting the most work of all the cars.

All the equipment gathered outside..

Down the tracks to the repair shops..

February 22nd and we are moving cars...

Now Diesel 19 is down so we are using our switch engine.. a backhoe!

Here is the Antonito Based parlor car, that's right the Antonito based parlor car has been freshly painted and has received a new silver roof.. it has also received shop made cup holders and a storage closet.

The painted and serviced cars will be stored on the main, the Parlor car rolls by the tank to the main.

Just so you know, you heard it here... We are going to do our best to paint every green car in Antonito into the new paint scheme!! That comes out to about 8 cars that will be changed over to red and silver from green. And as of Feb 22nd, we have repainted two and are prepping two more cars in the shop as we speak for new paint.

This Locomotive was built in 1924 for the Raritan Copper Works,Perth Amboy, N.J. as a saddle tanker.

Mr Stebbins procured this loco. in 1991 and had it hauled from Iowa to Ohio for restoration. Locomotive was finally completed in 1999. All restoration was done by a group of individuals whom wanted to help and restore to operation a steam locomotive.

All restoration work was primarily done outdoors. Tarps were thrown over the engine during Winter and we worked under them during the snow/cold periods.

Restoration work included boiler tube renewal, staybolt replacements, all new boiler piping ,valves, and fittings, new equalizer for the front drivers (for some reason they had removed the front equalizer and each axlebox was individually sprung) Mr Stebbins felt the loco would ride & track better with the equalization restored. He also added an automatic/straight air brake system utilizing a D&RGW K-1 triple valve/freight brake reservoir/brake cylinder  supplemented with relay valve & dummy brake cylinder. he didn't have a distributing valve so he used all those individual components to give about the same method of operation.

They also widened the cab. Locomotive was originally built for one man operation and there was no way us heavyweights would fit in there. Built a tender to replace the saddletank. That's why the steam & sand domes may look a little higher than usual.

Thank you very much to Harry Stebbins for these shots!!

Hey I stopped at the lights in Espanola, New Mexico... those are Driver wheels, I wonder where those came from???

Thanks to Buddy David Dickey, we are in Grand Junction, Colorado and will visit the shop where the Generators and traction Motors of Diesel 19 are rebuilt.

A look at Diesel 19's generators at the shop in Grand Junction.

You can see the rebuild as it happens...

These Generator bodies, I have to thank my friend David for these..

Here are the bodies of the two generators.

Here are the generator bodies and field coils..

They have been baked... Now I hope I got the info right and I want to thank David for these great shots.. its cool to see more of the process involved in getting Diesel 19 ready for service.. Hey I would like to invite your help, I would love to be able to get to chama at least every two weeks! How about some help from you all!!

That's what plowing thru La Veta pass will do to a Locomotive! See ya next week.
