Cumbres at Sunset... a cold and snowy February 2007.

Tangle-foot curve in the distance!!!

February 25th 2007 and I got a chance to visit the Chama Shop!!!

You are looking at the backhead of locomotive 489!

Here are a bunch of Tires... well Railroad tire's that is.. the ones in front are new and the ones in the back have been worked on a little, you can see the difference in size in the interior of the circle.

This is the machine used to cut the interior of the Tire's.. This one is for Diesel 19.

A look at the rear backhead of 489, you can see the new staybolts being installed. They still have to be cut and hammered down!

These staybolts have been installed and hammered.

You are looking at a finished axle with a new tire's for Diesel 19...  Diesel 19 is going to ride like a dream...

Now a look at the rear flue sheet of 489.. this will go in first and will become the new rear end of 489's boiler.

Now this is the front flue sheet of 489...

Hey check this out, have you ever seen a Driver axle without the tire's.. this is a Driver axle from 489 and it has it's tire's off...

A look at the work being performed on the frame!!

You are looking at the Engineer's side of the firebox... can you see the new Rigid and Flexible staybolts being installed.

Now here is a great look at 489... you are looking thru the smokebox, thru the removed front flue sheet, thru the boiler, thru the rear flue sheet, into the firebox and out the firedoor...

This shot is kind big, but I wanted to get you a good look at 489's interior.

Here is a driver axle, it is on the quartering machine and is missing its tire's...

I hope you like these picture's.. its not very often one can see a driver axle without its tire's.

Now here is one of Diesel 19's axle's on the big lathe.. it is being trued up for accuracy!!

Another shot of one of Diesel 19's axle without its tire's!!!

A snowy day at Los Pinos Tank!!! February 2007!!!

Now thanks to David Dickey, a contributing photographer for the website, we are back inside Rocky Mountain Motors in Grand Junction, Colorado!!! These guys handle all the electrical work for the Cumbres & Toltec and are working on Diesel 19's Generators..

This guy is hooking up one of the Armatures, (one of the nice and clean armatures that is) to the overhead hoist to dip it into the Varnish bath

The Armature is hanging just to the south of the pit.  The worker went off to get some cleaner to spray on the bottom of the Armature then he will apply some grease to the places they don't want the varnish to stick too. In this picture you can also see the Field Coils on the right, and lower left the other Armature.

The Armature is being lowered into the Varnish Dip!!

Some of the finished work at Rocky Mountain Motors. These belong to Diesel 19!!

That axle of Diesel 19's you saw in Chama, just a few picture's up.. Well here they are in Antonito...

Max brought the finished axle to Antonito from Chama.. We will wait for the second axle, then we will re-assemble one of Diesel 19's trucks..

Here is the main line in Antonito... starting from the left is the freshly re-painted and serviced Handi-cap car, next is one of last years red painted cars, fully serviced and ready for service and the freshly repainted and serviced Antonito Parlor Car.

In its new red paint, I think this car came out great!!!

As of Monday the 26th, we have another car in the shop and are working on its trucks and servicing its brakes!!

We are adding plates of metal to the interior of the journal boxes on the trucks.. we have been having to adjust the trucks to the newer wheels we are getting... the hubs on the tire's are smaller so that results in excessive lateral motion.. which we are repairing with the plates...

The tender of 489 is coming along beautifully.. the guys are really doing great on it!!

You can see the new bottom of the tender and the new Coal bunker being installed..

A snowy day at Los Pinos....

Cumbres Pass, check out the snow, its five feet on the marker.

Its snowing at Cumbres, February 2007.

February 25th and we are at Coxo Road Crossing below Windy Point.

Now look at this, a shot of Coxo Crossing... now if the rails are 3 feet apart, you can kinda guesstimate the height of the snow at about 5 feet above the rails!!!

A view of Cumbres... check out the station covered in snow!!!

The Car Inspectors house is up to the roof in snow..

Goodnight to Cumbres.. see ya later, Carlos!!
