Day 4 Trip Report

Drive Day

Chama, NM to Spring, TX

Monday morning came earlier than expected. I'd set my alarm for 5 AM, but awoke at 0415. I figured I'd might as well get up and get going. Texas wasn't getting any closer while I was sleeping. At 04:45 I drove into the yard and slowly headed towards the west entrance, taking in and savoring the sight for the final time on this trip.

The drive was long... 'nuf said.

I pulled into my driveway in Spring, TX at 2045... 15 hours later. I was exhausted, but totally satisfied. I can't wait to return to Narrow Gauge Country!

Update: 488 got over to Los Piņos the morning I left. 489 was re-railed and the train brought back to Chama (by 489) before dusk. That's one heck of an accomplishment by the C&T railroaders. The C&T resumed normal operations Wednesday morning. That is simply ASTOUNDING!! The spirit and tenacity of 19th century mountain railroading is alive and well in 2009!
