Trip Report

Day 8 - Saturday

Chama Steam VIII

The "grande" finale finally arrived! It was damp and cold in Chama this morning, but that just made the steam better. I got some grub at Carlatte's where I was introduced to William Diehl. Good guy. I wish I'd talked to him more.

I joined the throng of railfans in the yard, cameras in hand. After MANY pictures were taken I headed for the train. Nearing the cabeese I was thrilled to see that the coal stoves were lit. Not only because I was freezing my butt off, but also because it really added to the authenticity of the event. Departure was about 0850 and I rode in the cupola of 05635 on the way out of the yard.

I watched 488 do some switching from Terrace Ave and again briefly spoke with Jim Barton from the CRRM. I hope to get out to Golden next fall with my wife. My first and last trip there was in 2006. I'm overdue for another visit.

I got some grub from Fosters and retired early to start packing for the trip home the next morning. Before crashing I edited and posted a few pictures on the Goat.

This excursion was spectacular!! My thanks to Jay, Soni, Allen, and everyone at the C&T for making it happen.
