RGX 2012 - Trip Report

June 14 - June 23

Day 1 - Thursday, June 14

As I'm finally sitting down to write this report, it's January 2013 and nearly seven full months have passed since these events took place, including a second trip to Narrow Gauge County. So, many of the details are a bit fuzzy at this point.

The first part of this trip centered on GooseFest 2012 at the Colorado Railroad Museum. This would be my second visit to the CRM and I was pretty excited. I left Spring around 0200 with the intention of being well north of Ft Worth before morning rush-hour and even daybreak. I also wanted to get past Colorado Spring and Denver before evening rush-hour took hold. I easily cleared Ft. Worth, but wasn't so lucky in Denver. After 16 hours on the road, I got to spend about 45 minutes inching my way through the "mile high city" to get to the hotel in Golden.

This was my second time driving this route. Prior to leaving I read "Goin' Railroading," the story of two generations of Colorado railroaders. The son in the book (Sam Speas, Jr.) ended his career on the Colorado & Southern running this route through north Texas and southeast Colorado. Having read the book, I had a far deeper appreciation for the railroad I was running parallel to. It was easy imagine what it must have been like to highball a passenger train at 70 MPH.

Trip Objectives:

-Visit & ride the Georgetown Loop

-GooseFest 2012 at the Colorado Railroad Museum

-Kenosha Pass and Como on the abandoned C&S/DSP&P

-Friends of the C&T - Work Session C

-Ride the Cinco Animas on the Durango & Silverton

-Friends of the C&T - Work Session D

This was supposed to be an 18-day trip. However, I had to nix the second Friends Work Session because of lack of available supplies. I went home 7 days early to save my vacation time to be able to return later in the year to finish what we started.
