Before getting to work, I said hi to John Engs and Don Atkinson, then grabbed some photos.

The Friends are working on the cosmetic restoration of Rotary OY while the railroad repairs everything else.

Back at the CRF
John Engs and Don put me to work for a bit hanging new siding on OY. Those few minutes were the most fun I had all weekend!
My handy work.
After saying my goodbyes, I started the trek back to Spring. Though, I'd only go as far as Wichita Falls this day.
I decided to get photos of all the Depots on the way out of God's Country. Up first: Antonito This one is being restored and is starting to look really good.

Looking south down the mainline towards Santa Fe.
North to Alamosa.
Today the rails end about a mile south of Antonito. The last train to Santa Fe was in 1941... and the rails weren't this far apart.

I encountered quite a bit of rail traffic while heading southeast on US 87.
2 on the head end...
FIVE in the middle...
I don't recall ever seeing 5 mid-train helpers (DPU) in person
...and 2 on the rear.
9 units?! In my part of the world, that's unheard of.

Crossing the border to Texas near the appropriately named town of Texline. I got to Wichita Falls about 2100, spent the night, and got home about 1300 the next day. All in all, it was a very successful trip. |
