Here are a few picture's of 488, these are the staybolts that need to be replaced.

Here is one of the wheel machines, on top are the new #4 Driver Brake Shoes.. these are unlike the old ones, these are composite brake shoes.. or COBRA'S. And underneath are the old Steam Dome Caps.

Here is 488's left cyclinders, and Valve Guides.

Here is a look at 488's Frame, look at the level.

Another look at 488's cyclinders.

Here is 488's right side stripped down.

Here is 488's right cyclinder, you can look inside the valve and see the ports for steam.

488's cyclinders, this allows for a good look inside!

Here is 488's Smokebox, look close you can see the chama shop has actually replaced the front sheet.  Look down below and you can see how they have used bolts to hold the sheet in place while they install the rivets. They had to replace the rear sheet and to get the rear sheet in they had to remove and then replace the front sheet.

Another look at the front flue sheet.

A better look at 488's cyclinders. look inside the top one at the steam ports.

Here is 488's front Journal Boxes, these are for the front wheels.

Here is some brand new brass ready for machining and a expansion link most likely for 488.

More locomotive parts for 488.

Here are some more rods for 488.

One of the many Machining tools in the Chama Shop.

Working on some brass for the 488, If I am correct, they are working on a shoe brass.

A expansion link for 488, the shop can make most anything and are quite good at reusing old stuff, look underneath the expansion link, the shop used a old motor car wheel to make a stand to hold the link!

A view on top of 484's boiler, you can see the Boiler Jacket and Steam Turret.

A look inside 484's Boiler after the Hydro test, you can see the Throttle Valve!

Here is a shot I tried to get, it shows the old numbers stamped on the boiler...

Here is a new addition installed in the chama shop, it allows hot water to be put into the Boiler. It can actually keep a locomotive hot to a point.

Okay and now Thanks to the Official Photographer for the Friends Newsletter. Mr Tom Cardin has been so kind to share a few photo's with us! and these are Great, I would not have been able to get these without Tom's Help. maybe he will honor us with more photo's, Hint, Hint!!!!!

I was driving back and forth between chama on thursday, stopped for about 10 seconds and took a shot of Cumbres for you... April 22, 2004.

Look close at the pressure, 487 is doing great... we tried a Hydro-test on the 22nd, we did have a few weeping staybolts and staybolt caps and the throttle needed some work, but I am proud of the guys in Antonito and 487..  Locomotive 487 held a Pressure of 245 pounds of Pressure for 30 minutes Straight. But she didn't pass the test, so we rolled up our sleeves and went back to work.. I tell you what, when 487 is Steamed up, she is gonna Steam like a Brand New Locomotive!!

487's Boiler holding the Pressure in!!!!!!!!!

After the Test we went back to work, here is the Throttle valve on 487 removed, you can see right into the valve!!! We lapped the valve, that should seal it right up!!

Another view of 487's Throttle Valve. In the Background Marvin is cleaning and applying Lapping Compound to the valve!

Here is both Marvin One and Marvin Two, they are using two Torch's to anneal the Copper Ring that makes the seal on the Steam Dome! This process makes the copper softer to help it seal better.

Julio making a few repairs on the Welded Tubes in the Firebox.

Julio working on the Firebox Sheet.

Here is the Church in San Luis, the Oldest incorporated Town in Colorado. That is the end of this weeks updates, I hope you like these shots, Next week should be Great also.. Guess what, Antonito got 6 1/2 inches of fresh snow thursday evening, very wet snow... it is getting green here in the San Luis Valley and Chama Valley.  Thank You all very much and see ya soon.
