February 23rd 2004... in this Picture you are looking at the #4 Driver on the left side... we had to replace a couple of staybolts and in order to get them out and back in, we had to remove the Spring..

In this Picture, you can see the removed Staybolts right above and to the left of the Counterweight, the Spring has been completly removed!

In this picture you can see the removed spring hangers and saddles, you can see the Jack we used to "unload" the Spring and you can also see how we chained down the Equalizer during the work!! February 23rd 2004.

February 24th 2004, hey we may be rebuilding 487, but we are still the Car Shop and Car maintenance is our other priority. here is Car 500, fully rebuilt and serviced. It has been jacked up off its trucks and inspected and its brakes have been serviced and adjusted.,.

Car 502, fully rebuilt and freshly painted, it is the Colorado Snack Car and has a new full length counter installed, built on site..February 24th 2004.

Another Picture of Car 502... doesn't it look great!!

Here is old cast DRGW wheel set... it has been removed to meet new FRA Regulations. the Gold Paint is on the Machined Journal part of the axle, the paint actually prevents rust from building up during transport.. The old wheels will be pulled off the axle and new wheels will be put on, but thats the end-of-the-line for those old DRGW Wheels... ???Maybe somebody should save a set for History sake"???

Here is 488's Tender, it has been sand-blasted, the trucks have been rebuilt and the brakes have been serviced, the one leak we found has been repaired and it is ready for Primer painting!! February 26th 2004.

Another view of 488's tender ready for painting!!

Another picture of 488's tender, a close-up of the Rear Right Step. February 26th 2004.

Here's 488's Tender rear Head-light fully rebuilt and ready for installation back unto the 488 tender!

Sam and Joe whipping down the Tender with Thinner to clean it for painting.. February 226th 2004.

Feb 26th 2004, in this picture you can see the first batch of Flues for 487, they have been measured and cut to fit... and are ready for the next step...

in this picture is 4 of 487's flues, they are sitting in a bucket of Lime... this is part of the Hardening process applied to the ends of the Flues.

In this Picture, you can see 487's flues in the Oven, we are heating the ends of the Flues to a red hot state, after which they will be placed in the lime to harden them..

Just wanted to show you the Glow of the Oven, some of you will remember this oven, we used it to heat the Rivets for 484's tender... remember, you remember!!!

Another batch of 487's flues in the Lime... February 26th 2004..

Early Morning, February 27th 2004 and 488's primer Paint is dry and ready for the black paint!!

Joe doing some adjustments on 488's tender before the black paint was applied.

488's rebuilt coal-bunker doors.. Ronnie replaced alot of metal on those doors and re-adjusted them properly.. don't they look great!!

February 27th 2004, this is the front sheet of 487 and yes, the flues are going back in..

The first batch of Flues in 487's Boiler..

This is the Firebox and most of these flues have been Rolled already... you can see the rolling device in the last flue to the right.. it is driven by a Air-Ratchet.

In this Picture we are in the Smokebox... the flues on this side have been secured in place with Horseshoe nails to prevent them from moving. the opposite side is getting rolled.

February 27th 2004, this is the Engineers side of the Locomotive and some Staybolts have been installed.. we had to take a little Break, a whole new batch of Staybolts are being shipped to us as we speak.. when we receive them, we will begin to install them again!

Another view of the Flues getting installed...

Here's a New Machine that is helping us out, it can cut and clean the Flues all by itself..

Okay, here is the Firemans side of 487 and yes there is whole bunch of staybolts installed on this side... when we get that new batch we will put the rest in. February 27th 2004.

February 27th 2004, Early Afternoon and 488's tender has been painted black... look at the Shine on that thing!!!

488's tender freshly painted in Black... we will put a Brand new Logo on the side of 488's tender probably Monday the 1st of March... I won't tell you what Logo will be on there, but if you come back to this page you will be the first to see the New Logo on 488's side???????? I am going to suprise you, I know what it is, but I ain't gonna tell you!!!!!!

Here is Tommy in Antonito, he is working with us in Antonito for a few days and is in the Antonito Machine Shop making Tapered Bolts for 487.

Tommy working the Antonito Lathe!! February 27th 2004.

Here is Marvin rolling the Flues in 487... February 27th 2004.

Here is 487's firebox and 19 out of 23 flues have been rolled already..

You might not believe this, but read on... when we roll the flues, we need a Lubricant on the inside of the flue... well we use Crisco, it is a great lubricant and when we Fire up 487, the Crisco will burn off clean and leave no residual behind in the flue... and if we any left we can make cookies!!!!! February 27th 2004.

Another shot of 487's flues getting installed.. look thru the sheet and you can see the flues inside the Boiler..

Well that is the end of this weeks Update, its March next Monday.. we hope to letter 488's tender, continue flue and staybolt installation on 487and continue passenger car maintenance!! See ya next Week.. oh and the picture ...thats 497 at Lobato Siding with the Jordan Spreader, that was the Day I brought it down from Cumbres to Chama..
