On top of going thru 19 passenger cars and rebuilding 487 and working on the tenders, we also had to do some repair on the MOW Tamper.. here you can see on of its front wheels and hub. March 20th 2004.

Here you can see the Tamper partially holding itself up.. there is also two track jacks and a complete set of ties...

A complete shot of the Tamper..

Here you can see the Tampers front axle... you can see the drive sprockets and on that last machined section is where the hub and wheels go.. the Brake shoe can be seen above the axle..

We have a visitor, Donald "Ducky" Martinez came over to help us install the Arch tubes on 487... and they are tricky.  March 21st 2004.

You are in 487's firebox, the Arch tubes have been installed and a good portion of the Tubes have been rolled over for seal welding..

another view of 487's firebox!

Here you can see the Arch tube going into the wall of the Firebox down below the Tubes.. it has been seal welded and you can see the tubes and how they have rolled over. We were careful to position these tubes as they will later support the arch bricks and have to be right on or the arch bricks will fall down into the fire.

Here is the right Arch tube..

Here is a close shot of the left Arch tube.. it is installed high and to the side of the Fire doors, it has been rolled and the tube is actually expanded into the hole... if you look closely you can actually see how the tube is bulged out a little from the roller.

Another shot of 487's firebox flue sheet.. you can see the tubes and how they have been rolled back. March 23rd 2004.

Here is one of the installed Arch Tube Plugs... we added a sleeve to strengthen the Area around the plug.. there is also a few brand new Staybolt plugs.

here is a close-up of the new Arch Tube Plug... this plug allows us to wash the actual tube during a boiler wash.. it allows straight access into the arch tube.

Here is a close-up the Front Smokebox sheet.. if you look close, you can see some of the tubes have been rolled and some haven't.. there is actually a pattern to follow.. up, across. every other and so on!

A close-up of the front sheet.

the left side...

Here is a few of the large crownsheet staybolts, kinda long aren't they.. look closely the first from the bottom is a flexible staybolt.. it has a ball head that sits in the staybolt cap. the right side has threaded ends, those threaded ends go into the firebox sheet, above that staybolt is a Staybolt Tap.. you can see the tapered threads.

more staybolts..

Here is two staybolts on the outside and a tapered Tap..

A shot of the Rear Boiler head... you can see the Arch tubes Plugs installed..

A look at one of our tool tables, in the middle is a tap for the Boiler plugs, to the right and above is two Rivet Guns..  I am sorry, I had a cold this week, so my shop update wasn't very good.. sorry.. so I have gone into the Carlos Llamas Archive and will show you some shots of the Martinez Cut Rebuild, hope you like!!!

Diesel 19 and a single Ballast car.. getting ready to dump ballast over the new track at Martinez curve.

The Tamper crawling over the new track.

Diesel 19 and a single ballast car... and look at the new track..

Here are the Guys spiking down the new track... we had to use a Air Driven Spike Driver... the ties were oak and the spikes would occasionally just bounce back when you hit them!

More and more spiking!!

A Motor Car and its Trailer.. on the new Track!

A view of the New Track..

Look at that new Track...

Here is Diesel 19 and the Ballast Cars loading up.. in a few minutes, Diesel 19 will be the first Cumbres and Toltec Locomotive to crawl over the New Track..

Done Loading the curve with ballast..

My view from the Cab as Diesel 19 slowly crawls over the new Track.. it might not seem like much to everybody, but I was on Diesel 19 as the last train thru the Old Martinez Curve and I was able to run the First Cumbres and Toltec Train thru the new Curve.. Me and Diesel 19 kinda made History that Day... That simple process of dumping Ballast was kinda special to me!

Looking forward as we dump ballast..

Diesel 19 waiting for permission to come over the New Track...

another shot of the new track, a few spikes still need to be driven!!

Diesel 19... ain't that a pretty view.. and up to today, I was the only person to ever see it... this is to pretty to keep to myself.. I hope you all like it. Let me know if you liked these older pictures, if you do.. I will continue to add them to the Updates.. Have a Great one, See Ya later... Carlos Llamas
