A truck rolled in with a bunch of timbers to replace bridge timbers
along the railroad, wherever they are needed. These are some big
slabs of wood. |
|
Now, it took us a backhoe to unload these timbers, how in the blazes
are the Track Crews gonna get these to the bridges and put them into
place.. they are Heavy... |
|
Look at the size of these timbers compared to Ruby Garcia, one of
the MOW Employee's. |
|
Here is 487, the insulation has been put on ahead of the firebox and
we are working on the the rest of the exposed boiler.. |
|
We put on 487's cab... you can see the straps we used to lift the
cab into place.. |
|
The cab needed to be put into place before we could continue the
rebuild, we can't lift the cab high enough to clear the piping. It
is now in place and we will begin to bolt it down. |
|
You can see the Boiler jacket going on and the Horizontal Piece of
metal is one of the running board supports. |
|
Another view of the 487, most of the Jacket is in place, you can see
one of the Air Reservoir Brackets.. see the curved section to wrap
around the air reservoir. |
|
Another view of the Boiler Jacket.. you can see how it is cut to get
around all the brackets and such! |
|
A look into at 487's cab, the plumbing is going in. |
|
The cab in on and we still have to take the straps off.. |
|
The Insulation is going on over the Firebox, you can see how the
Insulation was applied along and in-between the Staybolt Caps. |
|
We had 2 guys from Chama come in to help us, Conductors Alan Loomis
and Ray Martinez.. Alan applied the insulation bricks and Ronnie is
applying the Mud to set them all in place! The Mud is a Cement
like material, it is mixed with water and applied wet in a sticky
muddy mix, then it dries into a light airy material. |
|
Remember the earlier photo of the insulation going on over the
firebox, the one that looked liked a puzzle, well here is the
finished product.. the insulation is now ready to be covered by the
Jacket. |
|
Here is the Mud insulation going on in the Cab, the insulation only
goes so far in the cab. But this stuff helps alot, it keeps the
boiler warm and protects the Engine Crew from the Heat. |
|
In this picture the insulation is coming in from the Right and most
of the boiler still needs to be covered. You can see in the picture
a red flat piece of metal running from the middle right to the
bottom left, that is the bottom of the insulation and that metal
strap also supports the Boiler Jacket in the cab! |
|
In this picture, you can see the Cab interior of 487, the metal
painted primer red.. is the new metal we had to replace.. this is
the Engineers floor of the Cab. |
|
You can see the Boiler jacket going on over the last section of
applied insulation. |
|
Here is the Air Pump Bracket.. it has 6 bolts on the top, 3 on the
bottom.. and it attaches to the pump with 4 bolts. |
|
Here is insulation on the boiler on the right side..you can see the
cab insulation is finished also.. |
|
Here is a close-up of a Air Reservoir bracket.. this part is bolted
to the boiler and the reservoir is attached to the bracket with a
strap that bolts to the top and attaches at the bottom with a U-bolt
and that bolt allows you to tighten "down" the reservoir. |
|
Here is 487 in the sun, we have it outside to attach the Air Pump. |
|
I am inside the backhoe looking thru the Windshield rolling forward
to pick up the air pump.. |
|
487 is starting to look like a Locomotive again.. |
|
Marvin and Ronnie are "chasing" a bolt on the Air Pump Bracket.. it
is a process in which the threads of the bolt are cleaned up to
allow the nut to go on and tighten easier after the bolt has been
damaged.. it is a renewing of the Bolt of sorts... |
|
Look at this picture, the 487 and the Tender of 489 are almost lined
up perfectly.. |
|
I am inside the Backhoe pushing the 487 back into the shop.. |
|
Here is the Cab, the insulation has been put on and so has the
jacket.. I am beginning to install the cab plumbing.. we were sure
to mark every connection and piece of plumbing, so the rebuild has
been going pretty good.. |
|
Here is the left side of the Cab, you can see how that strap i
mentioned earlier comes into play.. if you look closely a little
water is running out of the wet cement under the jacket.. |
|
Here is the Grate Shaker Holders, they have been bolted back into
the boiler. You can also see the metal floor.. we will install the
wood floor next week. |
|
Here is the re-installed Air Pump, it has been cleaned and bolted
into place, the Air pump is a very important piece of machinery, we
kept it in a boxcar out of the weather and dust. |
|
Here is a look at 487, she's a little dusty now, but we will paint
her soon.. the Air Reservoirs are in place, but we have yet to put
on the cooling pipes. |
|
Another look at 487.. |
|
The Firemans Injector has been installed and is ready for steam.. |
|
487 is starting to look "put Back together" once again after all
this time.. we are close to completion, I am getting excited. |
|
The Boiler Jacket is in, and so is the walk ways.. |
|
Here is the Steam dome, the water line from the "Monkey Tail" or
atmospheric valve is in place.. we will use this to connect 487 to
the water heater we installed for the Hydro Tests. |
|
Looking forward on the Firemans side, the Drifting Throttle Pipe and
Air Line from reservoir to reservoir has also been installed, we
have also put in the Electrical Conduit for the head lights and the
Water feed from the Firemans injector is in place also.. |
|
A few shots from the Archive's.. Locomotive 489 at Milepost 305. |
|
Blowdown... into the sunset. |
|
Look at that Steam.. |
|
Fireman Nathaniel Miller cleaning out 489's Mud ring.. |
|
Locomotive 489 getting ready to roll, we'll head for Antonito..
backwards after running a Work Train all day! |
|
Locomotive 489 sits in the Summer Sunset.. waiting for Dark! |
|
Ain't that a Beautiful Picture... I am gonna talk for a second...
This day me and my Fireman Nathaniel took a quick break after
running a work train and before heading for home.. I took a short
walk to take this picture and stood there amazed at the Picture I
was looking at.. Here was a Steam Locomotive sitting in this Golden
Sunset, the Aspens swayed in the Wind, the smell of Coal Smoke
drifted thru the Air. There was nobody else for miles around and
even though I knew I had a long Reverse run ahead of me... For that
small moment in time, I knew I was one of the Luckiest Guys in the
World to be standing there looking at 489 in the Summer Sunset Sun. |
|
Oops, I got a little out of Order here... Anyway... Here is 487's
floor, you can see the installed Grate shaker Brackets and Metal
Floor. |
|
Here is 487's Installed Fireman's Injector... we used all the same
parts, we just put in new gaskets and such! |
|
Here is a look at 487's Main Fountain, this is where the steam for
the 2 Injectors, the Blower "Steam Assisted Draft", the Steam for
the Dynamo "Electric Generator" and the Steam for the Air Pump come
from, each is connected separately and has a valve to shut the steam
off. |
|
This is a Journal Fire, could be the end of the Line, but no..
changed the Bearing added oil and went on with the work at hand. It
is amazing how resilient this equipment is. Well that is all for
this week, the 487 is going back together quick and will be ready
soon. The Colorado & Southern #9 hasn't arrived Yet, no idea what is
up on that Deal.. let you know as soon as I know the details. The
484 was test run and it handled Great, I might be lucky to get a run
on 484 this week, I will definitely take picture's... Thank you all
for the Post Cards, they are coming in already. The First one came
in from Buena Vista Colorado.. Thanks Ken.. I'll send you a
Hat soon... |
