Ronnie is installing the Grate's on 487...

These grate's are heavy and are kinda hard to put in.. Ronnie did a great job.. they worked great!

Well another load of Creosoted Timbers came in to Antonito, these are the Young Ladies who delivered them.. Not your Typical Heavy Load Truck Drivers, but the Timbers came in on time and in perfect condition, thanks Ladies.

Tuesday the 20th, 2004. Here is a look at 484's completed Cab.. It is ready to roll.

Here is the Firemans side.. looks Good doesn't it..

Your looking at the Firemans seat.. Boy my backside has put in alot of miles on that Baby!

Another look at 484's Cab. Look at that Puzzle of Plumbing!

Locomotive 484 sits in the Chama shop waiting for opening day...

Another look at 484 in Chama.

Your looking at one 488's Crown Brass Boxes.. this sits on the Journal of the Drive wheel and supports the weight of the Locomotive.

Here is Joe... He is a Long time, experienced Hostler in Chama.. he is one of the Unseen but very Important Railroaders on the Cumbres and Toltec, when the crews and passengers are sleeping, Joe is making sure the locomotives will be ready to roll in the morning!

A look at the Storage area in the chama shop, here is a few bells waiting to be reunited with their Locomotive's.

Look at all those new Staybolts Caps..

Your looking at brand new Firebricks...

Here's a few Air Pump Governors.

Okay gonna make a correction, these are not bridge timbers, they are Timbers for the Mud Tunnel. They are on their way to mud tunnel behind Diesel 19.

Diesel 19 is throttled up and pulling the load to Mud Tunnel.

Diesel 19 on its way.

You are looking at 487's front end, the bottom plate that supports the Cyclone is in as is the back plate..

You can see the plate in the rear ahead of the Flue Sheet and the bottom plate.. you can also see the exhaust port where the steam comes into the smokebox.

Here is the front end again "smokebox" the Petticoat pipe has been hung in place and has been bolted to the top of the smokebox, half of the Cyclone is also in place..

Here is the front end again, you can see the cyclone consist of a upper plate and lower plate, they in turn have blades bolted to them in a pattern that makes them turn around the circle.. you can see the angle irons on the lower plate and you can see how they bolt on. when the steam exhausts it enters the smokebox and goes straight up the petticoat pipe out the stack, this create's a vacuum that draws air from the below the grates thru the fire, thru the flues and thru the cyclone which creates a circular action and it fills the smokebox drafting the fire and exhausting the smoke. The Blower or steam assisted draft Ring sits in the gap below the petticoat pipe.

Wednesday night we burned the midnight oil.. its dark outside and the Antonito shop is working hard...

Jose and Julio came over from Chama to help us, Jose is doing a little welding.. the light from the Arc fills the Colorado night.

This picture kinda brings back memories of the Old roundhouses, as the Locomotives and warm light from inside kept the dark away!!!!

The guys are burned out, the dark outside shows how long the crew has been at work.

487 is being prepared for its fire up test the next day..

Thursday and Diesel 19 pulls 487 out of track 3 and .....

Diesel 19 puts 487 into Track 1, we will connect 487 to it's tender for the Fire-up test.

After all this work, Locomotive 487 and its Tender are back together.

487 is under Steam and showing about 195 pounds, that Gauge hooked up to the Monkey Tail is what the Inspectors used to calibrate and double-check the accuracy of 487's Steam Gauge. We used this Extra Gauge to set the Safety Valves and to double check 487's Cab Gauge.

487 is under steam and the water is flowing thru its injectors.. it was so great to see 487 under steam after all this work.. I am glad you were all here to follow us thru the rebuild, thank you!

Julio and Andy Spurlock discuss 487, a few more touch-ups to do and she will be ready for opening day.

Steam is venting from 487's safety valves.. Yeah!!

Look, red hot cinders in 487's ashpan..

Cold water flowing thru 487's Starting valve..

Here is a long shot of 487. she still needs a paint job, but it so good to see her back together.

487 ready for her paint job,

487 is cooling down after her steam test, we will now finish the wood work in the cab and the Air systems.

Friday and its time to take some tests, Joseph works on his safety test.

The Track Crews looks at some new Paperwork for this years Season.

Here is a few experimental Picture's. want to work on a few new ideas.. Diesel 19 passes Lava Tank from the Engineer's Seat!

Pushing two Flats cars just below milepost 312.

Entering Rock Tunnel.

Crossing Cascade Trestle.

Waiting for a Motor Car to take the siding at Los Pinos.

Diesel 19 Crossing Lobato Trestle.

Looking Back to Lobato Trestle.

Here is Rio Grande 01923 at South Fork Colorado on the Standard Gauge west of Alamosa Colorado. This is a image of Railroading that is gone Forever. only existing on Photographic Paper.. we work hard here in the Shops of the Cumbres and Toltec, we don't ever want our Railroad to disappear like this one did.. We will continue to do out best to make sure the Cumbres and Toltec and the History of the Rio Grande will live on forever.

Well thats all this week, next weeks update will have the opening day action on it.. see ya then.. Carlos Llamas
