Rolling Downgrade near Garcia's Cabin, I am on the Helper 487 and it's foggy and Cold... we have had snow already... But the Colors are Holding on and its Been Beautiful.

The Aspens are Gorgeous.. this is the View from 484 at "The Roller Coaster" near Milepost 316.

Another view of the Colors.

Well the Time has come.. its Time to start hauling Tie's.

The Tie's are loaded in Bundle's as they arrive by Truck..in the Gray Buckets are the Spike's.

You can see we use both Straps and Chains to hold the tie's in place for Transport.

The Tie's are fully loaded and Diesel 19 is tied on and ready to roll.

Locomotive 484 is getting Coaled up and if you look by the Water Tank, Diesel 19 is pulling out of Town with the Tie Train.

There Goes Diesel 19 heading out with the Tie's, At this point it is about 8:45 A.M., this gives the Diesel 19 plenty of time to get out and ahead of Locomotive 484 and Train 215.

I am on 484 and we are Passing Diesel 19 and the Tie Train, you can see the Track Crew has already unloaded quite a few Tie's already.

Locomotive 484 passing Diesel 19, Normally what happens is.. the Tie Train travels at a slow speed and the Track crew throw the tie's from the flatcars where they are needed and they keep going until they run out of tie's.

Well its a Beautiful Friday Afternoon and I am once again in Santa Fe, except this time I am gonna ride!!!! The Passenger Train for today's run to Galisteo Basin is in the Station.

A Vintage Coach and Caboose bring up the Rear of the Train. The Coach 1158 came from Central Railroad of New Jersey and was Built in 1922 by Bethlehem Shipbuilding Company in Delaware. The Caboose built in 1946 and used by the AT&SF as a Livestock Service Caboose brings up the rear and holds the Crew, Now let me tell you a few "Very Cool" things about this Caboose.. The Train occasionally has to run in Reverse with the Caboose up front.. well this Caboose has been equipped with a Horn above the Cupola and the Crew Riding the Caboose Platform can actually blow a Road Crossing Warning from the platform of the Caboose. I loved that Idea and it works Great and sounds Great, I love this Railroad.

The Dome First Class Car sits up Front. Now this is actually only one of 6 Dome Cars made for the AT&SF Super Chief. It was made in 1950 and has 16 Dome Seats and has Excellent, I mean excellent 360 Degree Views.

Santa Fe Southern Brakeman Janice Convery makes Her Pre-Trip Inspection..

Santa Fe Southern Number 92 pulls up to the Station to pick up the Train.

Now here is Engineer Ashley Burns onboard SFS 92, Locomotive's 92 & 93 are both Early 1950's GM Electromotive Division Locomotive's, the 92 has 1500 Hp and the 93 has 1600 Hp.

Brakeman Estevan Montoya and Engineer Ashley Burns..

Locomotive 92 running in reverse pulls the Train to Galisteo Basin. The SFS has some Beautiful Wooden Trestle's. Todays train had Engineer Ray Becich at the Throttle.

Looking thru the doorway of Coach 1158 to the Caboose.

The Interior of Coach 1158, there at the far end is Michael Davenport, He is the Host of the Car and is very Knowledgeable about the History and Scenery along the Railroad and is a really nice Guy.

Here's Michael Davenport, he is a Car Attendant with the Santa Fe and is quite the Expert on the Region.

Some of the Beautiful Scenery seen from the Train.

A view of Santa Fe from the Dome Seats.. I loved the ride up here, it felt like I was floating above the Ground, Amazing. If I am Correct Elizabeth Taylor was rumored to have spent one of her 45 or so Honeymoons aboard this Car while it was on the Santa Fe Super Chief.

Here's a few interior shots of the Caboose. I used a Fisheye Lens because I want to take you right into the View that I was Experiencing.

Looking up into the Cupola.

Some of the Seating in the Caboose.. the Caboose actually has 16 seats.

Being a Engineer I have the best Seat in the House, but I have always Dreamed of Riding a Cupola across the Country, Thanks to the Santa Fe Southern, I was able to fulfill a Small part of my Dream... I enjoyed the Santa Fe Scenery thru the Cupola Windows...

That is a view that Is Magical.. Thank you SFS for making my Dreams to ride a Cupola come true.

The Opposite Seat in the Cupola.

Looking down to the Rear Platform, now running as Point of the Train.. You Can see Estevan Montoya and Janice Convery.

Riding the Platform Back to Santa Fe.

Even with me on board. the Crew maintained a Vigilant Watch on the Tracks ahead. Brakeman Janice Convery watches the Tracks and maintains Radio contact with Engineer in the Cab.

Santa Fe Southern's Finest!! Brakeman Janice Convery and Estevan Montoya.

Riding the Platform....

Over a Wooden Trestle and heading for Santa Fe.

The Santa Fe Southern has some Beautiful Wooden Trestle's.

Here the train crosses under the Interstate 25 Highway.

Estevan and Janice watch the Tracks ahead.

Coming to a Crossing, Janice Radio's to the Engineer and give's him a Clearance and Estevan blows a Road Crossing Warning.

Passing a Siding and a Couple of Boxcars set out... this is some of the Freight that the Santa Fe Southern handle's. The BN&SF brings in freight to Lamy, New Mexico and hands it over to the Santa Fe Southern for Movement to and out of Santa Fe.

Crossing the Cerrilo's and St. Francis Intersection!!  The Train crosses this Busy Intersection and Brakeman Estevan Montoya Sounds a Road Crossing Warning from the Horn on the Caboose's Cupola.

The Modern Day Face of Railroading, Janice is a Professional Railroader with a Wonderful Personality, She is one of the Many Railroaders that make the SFS Shine, Thank you to Janice and everybody else for my Wonderful First Run over the Santa Fe Southern.

Backing into the Santa Fe Depot.. and my Wonderful First Trip on the SFS is over.

SFS 92 is still tied on to today's Train, but will soon cut off and head out to do some switching.

Santa Fe Southern 92...

And I have to say Goodbye to the Santa Fe Southern, I'll be Back...

Here is the Firemans Side Sheet, it has been welded in place! The next step will be to polish down the Weld and make it smooth... the actual Smoothing down with "Paddle Wheel Grinding Wheels" will reveal any cracks that may form during the Welding.. it's a way to double check!!!!

Another look at the Engineers Side Firebox Sheet.. if you remember, this actually looks pretty similar to the 487 repair.

This is the Engineer's Side Firebox Sheet. It has been tack Welded in place and also has a few bolts in to hold it in place.

Another look at the Engineer's firebox Sheet.

And the Welding goes on.

Putting in the New Staybolts, this is a test fit and will help keep the sheet in place.

The Connecting Rods are going on.

The Connecting Rods are going on first, everything has to go in a certain order. After the Connecting Rods the Main Rod goes on, the Third Driver has a extra long Crank Pin for this.. after the connecting Rod, the Main Rod goes on, then the Eccentric Crank.

They are working on the Packing on the Piston Rod, this makes the seal around the piston rod and keeps the Steam from leaking out of the Cylinder. You can see the Packing Housing on the Rod.

This is the Engineer Side Cylinders, above, the top one is open and you can see the valve installed.

This is the Main Crank-Pin, You can see how long it is.. The Connecting Rods are on, next comes the Main Rod, then the Eccentric Crank.

Another view of the Connecting Rods.

Donald is threading the new Staybolt Holes.

A look at the Left Cylinders, you can see the Crosshead is installed and they are working on the Valve."
