Narrow Gauge Country

September 13-22, 2013

Friday, September 13 - Drive Day

Spring, Texas to Trinidad, Colorado

We left Spring at 0400. The drive up to Trinidad was uneventful and relaxing.

I knew this trip was going to be special from the initial planning. My father has dreamed of taking me and my brother, Ben, to "his" mountains since we were kids. It's been a decades-long wait for him, but it was finally going to happen. Railroad exploring would have to be minimized on this trip in favor of family time. However, what made this trip especially poignant for me is that two weeks before leaving, Michele informed me that we were expecting our first child. The last time I was so elated was the day she said, "I do."

Life will, naturally, be changing in the coming months and this trip to Narrow Gauge Country could well be my last for a few years. I made a deliberate effort to savor every moment, knowing that the next time I visit I will likely be sharing the experience with a new generation! Could life possibly get any better than that?!

The trip over Raton was the highlight of the drive up to Colorado. The temperature took a refreshing drop into the 40's at the top. It was in the 90's when we left Houston!

At the hotel, we met up with Chris (father) and Karen (father's wife). Much rejoicing ensued. However, 20 minutes later Chris was sick as a dog. At the time it was only a minor set-back, but there were lasting repercussions. More on that later...

With Chris out-of-commission, Ben, Michele, and I went in search of dinner in Trinidad. We landed at an Italian place called Rino's. The food was great and the live music from the wait staff was pretty decent.
